Viewed through this lens, the relationship between cases and deaths becomes clearer. Deaths lag behind cases by roughly two to three weeks, a grim echo that follows every surge.
But the amplitude tells another story. The spring death peak, when healthcare systems were overwhelmed and treatments were experimental, was disproportionately high relative to cases. By the autumn surge, even as cases reached new records, the death rate had declined — a testament to improved clinical management, even in the absence of widespread vaccination.

By October 25, 2020 — day 297 of available surveillance data — the world had recorded 91.5 million confirmed cases and 2.5 million deaths. The daily case count had just hit an all-time high of 1.15 million, and there was no sign of a plateau. Vaccines were still months away from widespread distribution in most countries.

Asymptomatic infections, limited testing capacity, and inconsistent reporting standards across countries mean these numbers should be understood as a floor, not a ceiling.
